Cell nuclei are stained with hemalaun or Weigerts iron-hematoxylin and then counterstained with a dye mixture of orange-phosphormolybden with aniline blue.

Die Zellen des Nebennierenmarkes entsprechen entwicklungsgeschichtlich und aufgrund ihrer funktionellen Eigenschaften dem zweiten Neuron des Sympathicus. Sie empfangen cholinerge Synapsen und synthetisieren bzw. sezernieren Katecholamine, bilden allerdings selbst kein Axon und keine Synapsen. Gelegentlich findet man hier auch eine voll differenzierte sympathische Nervenzelle. Der Ausdruck "chromaffine Zellen" bezieht sich auf besondere Färbeeigenschaften der Nebennierenmarkszellen.
